Motorcycle Unit
The University of Florida Police Department currently utilizes four Harley Davidson motorcycles to make up the special operations Motorcycle Unit. Each motorcycle is equipped with emergency lights, siren, specialized communications equipment, and is clearly marked with the department’s seal and police markings.
The Motorcycle Unit is staffed by three full-time police officers, and one part-time police officer. The officers assigned to the unit have successfully completed a eighty (80) hour Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission (CJSTC) motorcycle operators course. Officers assigned to the unit must also possess a valid motorcycle endorsement on their drivers license as required by state law.
The motorcycle officers perform many functions for the department and the university community. As with most police motorcycle units, traffic and parking enforcement on campus is the primary function of this specialized unit. Officers also provide security in the Plaza of the America’s area where they patrol for illegal activity such as trespassing and soliciting, but most importantly provide safety and security information to bicyclists and pedestrians in high traffic areas.
Motorcycle Unit officers also provide specialized functions including escorts of dignitaries around campus. On the University of Florida home football game weekends, the motorcycle unit provides escorts and security for the team and band buses. The unit will also provide escorts for campus shuttles and handicap buses.
